The Benefits Of Becoming A Franchisee (And How To Choose A Franchise)

Renae Gaudette, Chief Operating Officer at Winmark the Resale Company.

If you’re someone who dreams of quitting their day job and striking out on your own, you’re not alone. “Roughly three in five Americans (61%) have had an idea for starting a business,” according to a Harris Poll survey commissioned by Zapier. However, an overwhelming majority of those aspiring entrepreneurs—92%—never ended up putting their plans into action.

It’s not surprising. Some say that coming up with an idea is just about the easiest part of starting a new business. It’s everything else—raising the capital, building a business model, streamlining operations, training people and marketing to consumers—that really puts people to the test.

Luckily, there’s more than one way to launch your own business venture—including franchising. As a franchisee of a successful brand, you get to enjoy the autonomy of running your own business while benefiting from a proven business model, brand awareness, franchisor guidance and a network of support from vendor partners and fellow franchisees.

With an estimated 792,000 franchise establishments in the U.S., there are franchising opportunities to explore across myriad sectors—from quick service restaurants to real estate, resale and more.

Curious? Let’s dive deeper into all the reasons a career as a franchisee could be the path for you and how to choose a franchise.

1. A Ready-Made Recipe For Business Success

As the COO of a franchising business, I know embarking on a new business venture can be a daunting task, especially when you’re starting from scratch. As a franchisee, it doesn’t have to be.

Franchisors have already invested significant time, money and effort into building their brand and business approach. Plus, every franchisee before you has learned what works and shared what doesn’t to help create a stronger model.

So when your time comes, you’ll be able to draw from a business model that has already proven its resiliency. That means significantly less risk for you, both financially and personally—and a better chance of success.

2. A Supportive Community Fighting In Your Corner

One of the most compelling aspects of joining a franchise is the unparalleled support system that often comes with it.

As a franchisee, you’re never alone in your journey. You have the support of your franchisor, as well as a network of fellow franchisees who are eager to share their wisdom on best practices.

Whether you encounter hurdles or uncertainties or want to seek guidance on how to propel your business to new heights, you will generally find a community of like-minded individuals who genuinely want you to thrive.

3. Power In Numbers: Vendor Partners

Starting a business often involves sourcing suppliers, negotiating deals and establishing relationships with vendors that you’ll need to start a business, including credit card processors, accounting, payroll and business supplies. As a franchisee, you can benefit from the power of numbers.

Franchise networks often allow you to access group pricing for vetted vendors, saving you both time and money. This pooled buying power grants you the advantage of securing favorable deals that might not be possible to obtain as an individual entrepreneur, giving you an edge in the market from day one.

Getting Started On The Franchisee Journey

There is clearly no shortage of benefits to starting a new business venture as a franchisee. But how do you go about finding the right opportunity? As someone who’s seen plenty of new franchisees begin their journey, there are three main things to keep in mind as you get started:

1. Dig Into Performance

The path to becoming a successful franchisee begins with thorough due diligence. First and foremost, make sure the franchisor is financially stable with a track record of consistent brand success. Most information is disclosed in their Franchise Disclosure Document, but there are several steps you should be sure to take:

• Look at the brand’s average unit sales and gross margins disclosed in their Franchise Disclosure Documents. Are they improving over a period of time?

• Ask about their franchise renewal rates. Most franchise agreements are 10-year contracts. A high renewal rate speaks volumes about franchisee satisfaction.

• Speak with as many franchisees as you can. They can offer valuable insights into the day-to-day realities of being a franchisee to help you paint a clearer picture of what to expect.

2. Find The Right Match

Take time to explore the franchisor’s website and understand their requirements for new franchisees. To qualify, you’ll need to have the right combination of financial readiness, skills and expectations. Additionally, read into their company values and assess whether they align with yours. The brands we support are focused on serving their local communities through value-based, sustainable solutions in resale. We are successful because our franchisees are aligned with the values of the brands they represent. Whatever the brand’s values are, alignment is important for your long-term success.

3. Know Your Value

Remember, a good franchise is not just selling you an opportunity—they are awarding it to the right person who believes in the brand’s core values. A strong franchise company treats the process as a mutual interview, where you assess the fit as much as they do.

Becoming a franchisee provides a unique and exciting pathway to career autonomy. With a proven business model at your disposal, a supportive network to rely on and access to cost-effective, vetted vendors, the stage is set for success.

As you embark on this journey, remember that the right franchise can offer you more than just independence. It could grant you the opportunity to join a network of passionate entrepreneurs who care about making a real mark on their community. Do your research, and be patient until you find the opportunity that truly reflects your values. Your future self will thank you for it.
