How The Film Industry Can Shift Toward Impact-Oriented Storytelling

News Room By News Room July 14, 2023 4 Min Read

Producer, impact investor, founder of Untold.io.

The film industry has long been a powerful medium for storytelling, and it has the ability to shape society and influence individuals. As independent filmmaking continues to gain momentum, I think Hollywood is uniquely positioned to embrace a more impact-oriented approach to storytelling, for example by focusing on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As a producer and the founder of a crowdfunding platform for movies and television, I want to explore some specific strategies for implementing impact-oriented storytelling and discuss the popularity of this content as the industry evolves.

Why is impact-oriented storytelling important?

In a world grappling with complex challenges, it is crucial for the film industry to take responsibility for the narratives it shares. By focusing on important issues, filmmakers can harness the power of storytelling to inspire change, raise awareness and promote sustainable development.

This shift toward impact-oriented storytelling could not only benefit society but also create opportunities for filmmakers to explore fresh, innovative and meaningful narratives.

How can filmmakers implement impact-oriented storytelling?

Hollywood has already begun to embrace impact-oriented storytelling with films highlighting pressing societal issues and engaging audiences in important conversations. Furthermore, there are various initiatives to promote sustainable production practices and demonstrate the industry’s commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

Here are four strategies for filmmakers who want to focus on impact:

1. Prioritize authenticity to better connect with viewers.

To create impact-oriented content, filmmakers must strive for authenticity. This means engaging with the communities and individuals most affected by the issues addressed in the stories. By doing so, filmmakers can help ensure that their narratives are genuine, respectful and accurately represent the challenges faced by these communities.

2. Collaborate with the experts.

Partner with experts, NGOs and organizations working on specific issues as they can provide filmmakers with valuable insights, resources and access to the real-life stories that will resonate with audiences. These collaborations can also help filmmakers navigate complex issues, ensuring that their films are accurate, informed and impactful.

3. Focus on representation and diversity.

Make sure to prioritize the representation of diverse voices and perspectives. By amplifying underrepresented voices, filmmakers can challenge stereotypes, foster empathy and create a more inclusive and equitable world.

4. Aim to educate and engage viewers.

Impactful films often spark discussions and inspire viewers to take action. To maximize this effect, I suggest filmmakers develop educational resources, host panel discussions and collaborate with grassroots organizations to engage audiences and encourage them to contribute to the cause.

What is the future of impact-oriented content?

As independent filmmaking becomes increasingly popular, I think the demand for impact-oriented content will grow. Many audiences crave meaningful stories that resonate with their values and inspire change. By adopting a storytelling approach centered around impact, the film industry can not only create captivating content but also contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world.

Impact-oriented storytelling has the potential to revolutionize the film industry and redefine the narratives we share. Filmmakers can inspire change, raise awareness and promote sustainable development, all while captivating audiences with powerful stories. As the industry evolves, embracing impact-oriented content can benefit society and provide filmmakers with fresh and meaningful narratives to explore.
