Earlier this week, a Fulton County grand jury indicted former President Donald Trump in connection with his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. The indictment is the result of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ two-year investigation into the former president’s actions.

Willis, a member of the 2023 50 Over 50 list, became the first woman to serve as Fulton County’s DA in 2021. She was thrust into the national spotlight just one month into her new role, when she announced the investigation into the former president. She has significant experience issuing racketeering charges in Georgia, and on Monday night, she invoked this experience while refuting claims that her investigation was politically motivated.

“I make decisions in this office based on the facts and the law. The law is completely nonpartisan,” Willis said. “This office has indicted since I’ve been sitting as a district attorney over 12,000 cases. This is the 11th RICO indictment. We followed the same process.”

It will be up to the court to determine when this case goes to trial, but Willis said Monday her office wants the case to go to trial within the next six months. We will certainly be watching.

Cheers,

Maggie

Forbes’ Next Billion Dollar Startups 2023: This Scientist Thinks You Should Pay $215 A Month For ‘Good’ Bacteria To Help Control Your Diabetes

Biotech researcher Colleen Cutcliffe designed probiotics to help diabetics lower their blood sugar. Now she’s got a handful of expensive supplements for sale—with Halle Berry on board to help sell them—and is one of the new members of the 2023 Forbes list of the Next Billion Dollar Startups.

ICYMI: News Of The Week

Have you been romantically propositioned on professional site LinkedIn? If so, you’re not alone: A new study found a whopping 91% of female Linkedin users say they have received romantic advances or sexually inappropriate messages at least once. Almost a quarter said the messages showed up in their account daily or every other day.

A federal appeals court on Wednesday ruled to restrict women’s access to the abortion pill mifepristone, partially upholding a lower court decision that imposed restrictions on the commonly used pill and setting up a potential high-stakes ruling by the Supreme Court, though the pill will remain on the market for now.

The right-leaning American Alliance for Equal Rights recently filed a lawsuit against Fearless Fund, an early-stage venture capital firm that focuses on funding women founders of color, accusing them of racial discrimination in their grant program for Black female founders.

Former world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki’s comeback to tennis after more than three years ended prematurely when she was beaten 6-2, 7-5 by reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the second round of the Canadian Open.

Moira Forbes spoke to CNN earlier this week about a frustrating dichotomy we’re seeing: Women’s spending power is growing—as evidenced by the billions of dollars we’re spending on Barbie, Taylor Swift, and female-focused products and services—yet that power has been slow to translate to progress in leadership representation.

The Checklist

1. Brag without the backlash. A new approach, called “dual-promotion,” helps both men and women to speak about their accomplishments without taking a hit to their likeability. The secret is giving credit to others while singing your own praises.

2. Support Maui wildfire relief efforts. Our hearts go out to every single individual who has been affected by the devastating wildfire in Maui. For those who have the means to help with relief efforts, here is a useful (and vetted) roundup of five organizations making a difference.

3. Get the P&L experience you’ll need to be CEO. The ability to manage a company’s profit and loss is a key component of becoming a chief executive someday. If this is a growth area for you, start by listening to investor calls, reading proxy statements, and seeking out projects that require this knowledge.

The Quiz

For all its box office success—more than $1 billion grossed worldwide—Barbie isn’t universally adored: several countries have pulled it from theaters. Which country is the latest to have banned the film from its cinemas, without providing an explanation?

A. The Philippines

B. Algeria

C. Lebanon

D. Saudi Arabia
