Geena Rocero Calls For ‘Accomplices’ In Fight For Trans Rights

In 2023 alone, over 560 anti-trans bills have been introduced nationwide — and over 80 have already passed, according to the Trans Legislation Tracker. These pieces of legislation affect education, sports, health care — and author, director and producer Geena Rocero calls the situation on the ground “really dire.”

“A group of people that are supposed to protect all citizens are specifically demonizing what is already the most vulnerable in our community,” Rocero tells Forbes. Back in March 2014, model Geena Rocero went viral for coming out as transgender during a Ted Talk. Among wearing the hats of author, director and producer, she has been a prominent trans rights advocate for close to a decade.

For transgender Americans, Rocero believes there’s “so much on the line” at this moment. What does the trans community need, according to the advocate? “We need accomplices right now — we really need more than the lip service.”

The “Horse Barbie” author explains to Forbes the difference that she sees when it comes to being an ally versus an accomplice. “Ally, for me, is a verb, not a noun,” begins Rocero. “It’s what you do … It should be a constant, dynamic conversation about what needs to be done.”
